…All aboard the Hype Train!
It was announced in Nintendo Direct today Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon, whose logos were leaked on the internet yesterday (presumably on purpose) will be the next gen games. Speculation was they would be Gen 6.5 ala White 2/Black 2 but they will be the seventh gen. They will be released on the Nintendo 3DS Worldwide this holiday season, which means between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
That is literally all that is known about the games as of right now. This also marks the third time two gens were released on the same console. Red/Blue and Gold/Silver were released on the original game boy, the original Ruby/Sapphire were released on the Game Boy Advance and Diamond/Pearl and Black/White/Black2/White2 were released on the Nintendo DS.
The other bit of news released is the Virtual Console versions of Red, Blue and Yellow–which are being released tomorrow, mind you–will be able to transfer data to Son and Moon via Pokemon Bank. The catch is you will not be able to transfer data between X/Y/OmegaRuby/AlphaSapphire and Red/Blue/Yellow.
Cross-Gen trading seems to be a huge point of focus in Sun/Moon. I just hope there isn’t any gating like there was in the 4th and 5th gens: To import from the third gen, you needed to see every Pokemon in the Sinnoh Dex in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum and then play a minigame in the 4th gen to complete the transfer. To import from the 4th Gen, you first needed to beat the Elite Four and to add injury to insult, you also needed a second handheld to transfer Pokemon plus play an annoying minigame to do it.
The sixth gen got it right in my book with the Poke Bank App. I hope we don’t see any gating in the 7th gen.
