Nintendo’s new Switch models reveal Nintendo has big plans for the future

Nintendo’s new Switch Lite Model will be a 100% handheld. Unlike the original and a new version with an extended battey life, the Switch Lite will not be a Hybrid Console. Gamespot put together a nice comparison chart here for the current, new and Lite versions.

The Switch Lite will sell for $200 while the new Switch with longer battery life will sell for the same price as the current one, $300. The original Switch has a battery life of 2.5 to 6.5 hours on a single charge undocked. The Lite’s battery life is 3 to 7 hours. The new Switch’s battery life is a MONSTEROUS 4.5 to 9 hours undocked. The reason for the range in battery life is because the game you’re playing or software you’re running dictates how long the battery will last. A game Like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will probably drain the battery faster than say, the Super Mario Bros. (Virtual Console version).

…If I owned a Switch right now, I’d be PISSED. Two years ago, I almost bought one. I walked into a Gamestop knowing I was going to either buy a Switch or a Playstation 4. The one I didn’t buy then, I would buy in a few years. I left with a PS4 and I regret nothing. See, I’m not like most folks who buy a home console as soon as it comes out. I wait a few years. That way when I finally do buy it, there are a LOT of games released for it for me to choose from. I bought a Wii U the month before I bought my PS4 so…yeah.

I do plan to buy the Switch with the longer battery life obviously. I also plan to wait until next year to see if there will be a price drop or bundle involving the new Switch.

In terms of games I’m looking to play on the Switch, here’s a list of several games I’m looking at:

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses #
  • Pokemon Sword or Shield #
  • Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu! or Eevee!
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition #
  • Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition*
  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim*
  • Final Fantasy VII* (original)
  • Clannad*

* Denotes I already have the game on another console or PC
# Denoyes the game has not been released as of this writing

…All the more reason I am in no rush of course. In terms of prioritizing game purchases, I’ll either buy Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Clannad or Xenoblade Chroncles 2 and Clannd first.

I mentioned this several times over the last 5 years but I DO have two Nintendo 3DS consoles and by extension yes, I do have two My Nintendo Accounts. So in, I could own two Switch consoles and run it like I do with my 3DS consoles: Mostly physical on one, mostly digital on the other. I would get the Switch Lite second and run it with mostly digital and Virtual Console games. Of course, that’s just thinking ahead mind you.

Anywho, that’s my plans regarding the Switch in the next year or two. I do expect there to be a significant gap between the two Switch purchases as well. 6 to 12 month inbetween. Of course, all this is just speculation on my part and assumes I’ll have stable income to make just the first purchase as well. Time will tell.
